Lottery boost for Rhu edible garden

An ‘edible garden’ project in Rhu has been awarded over £40,000 in lottery funding.

Volunteers started work in the garden at Rhu Hall in February and the sessions are already proving popular with locals.

The project was given National Lottery Community Funding for two years, totalling £42,284 and the latest initiative is a seed swap this Thursday (March 30).

Coordinator Jessica McLean said: “The community have been very supportive of this project from the outset.

“There will be community activities for all ages, volunteering opportunities and provision of free access to fresh locally grown produce. All provided free thanks to National Lottery players.

“The aims are to support local people to improve physical and mental wellbeing, build community connections and develop new skills.”

Volunteer sessions are held on Monday and Thursdays from 10am until 11.30 – no previous gardening experience is necessary and you don’t need to live in Rhu to take part.

There are also occasional weekend volunteer gardening sessions.

The seed swap will be held this Thursday from 11am to 11.45, when everyone is invited to swap flower and vegetable seeds that are excess packets, unwanted varieties, self-saved, out of date, from magazines or partially used.

Anyone without seeds is still welcome to go along and take some free of charge.

Future planned events and activities include a plant swap, child and parent growing classes and a free community meal.

Information on the garden is available via its Facebook page, or you can sign up to a newsletter by emailing rhuhallmac@gmail.com .
