Major expansion at Faslane naval base announced

The number of Royal Navy personnel living at Faslane is set to rise by nearly 40%, a new report has revealed.

And more infrastructure is being planned at the base on the Gareloch to accommodate new Dreadnought-class submarines.

All accommodation at the base – a total of 2,602 cabins – has been built in the last 20 years.

But another 1,025 cabins are being planned to house extra staff who will move to the Clyde when the Royal Navy Submarine Training Centre opens there in 2025, replacing the current facility at Torpoint in Cornwall.

Commander Peter Noblett, executive officer at HM Naval base Clyde, gave the update to Rhu and Shandon Community Council earlier this month.

He said many buildings in the working areas of the base were ‘nearing the end of their serviceable life’ and would be replaced in the next few years.

And the new Dreadnought subs (above) will ‘require additional infrastructure work around jetties and docking facilities’.

Commander Noblett added: “The good news for the local economy is that there are plenty of employment opportunities within the base, ranging from multi-million pound project managers to part- time catering and cleaning staff.

“There will undoubtedly be a huge demand for hotel accommodation for all the additional contractors.”

The four Dreadnought-Class submarines, each the length of three Olympic swimming pools, will be based at HM Naval Base Clyde and armed with Trident nuclear missiles, will replace the Vanguard-class submarines and are expected to enter service in the early 2030s.
