December by-election winner won’t stand for Conservatives in May

The winner of a by-election three months ago will not be standing for the Conservatives in May’s Argyll and Bute Council elections, it was revealed today.

Paul Collins won the by-election in the Lomond North ward which was caused by the resignation of his fellow Tory Barbara Morgan.

But today the Scottish Conservative party confirmed that its candidate for that ward in the May 5 election would be Maurice Corry.

The party’s three other sitting councillors – Gemma Penfold and David Kinniburgh in Helensburgh and Lomond South, and Gary Mulvaney in Helensburgh Central – are all standing for re-election, while a second candidate for Helensburgh Central is expected to be announced soon.

Mr Corry was a Lomond North councillor from 2012 to 2017 and an MSP from 2016 to 2021.

In December Cllr Collins told this website that if successful in the by-election he would stand for re-election in May.

“know many local people are frustrated by the timing of the by-election, as it won’t feel like long again until council elections in May,” he said at the time.

“However, if elected I would get straight to work for local residents, however they voted and would hope to secure their trust again when standing for re-election.”
