Conservatives hold Lomond North in by-election

Paul Collins has been elected as a councillor for the Lomond North ward of Argyll and Bute Council following a by-election yesterday (Thursday).

The Conservative candidate was elected at stage four of the Single Transferable Vote process, receiving 742 first preference votes.

There were 1,842 valid ballot papers and 19 rejected ballot papers, giving a percentage turnout of 29.6%.

The full results are as follows, with candidates in alphabetical order and the number of first preference votes they received:

  • Paul Collins (Scottish Conservative and Unionist) – 742
  • Mark Irvine (Independent) – 418
  • Robert MacIntyre (Independent) – 204
  • Ken Smith (Scottish National Party) – 459

The by-election was called after the sudden resignation of Conservative councillor Barbara Morgan.

The Lomond North ward includes the Rosneath Peninsula, Garelochhead, Rhu, Shandon, Arrochar, Tarbet and part of Loch Lomondside.

This was the third by-election held by the council in 2021 – Conservative Gemma Penfold won the Helensburgh and Lomond South ward in March, with independent LIz McCabe winning the Isle of Bute on the same day.

A scheduled full election for all of Argyll and Bute will be held next May.
