After the deluge: some roads and rail lines reopen

The A814 between Helensburgh and Garelochhead has finally reopened, after being closed for several hours during yesterday’s heavy rain.

Argyll and Bute Council staff, contractors and police all worked overnight to help clear a large flood near the Faslane peace camp, which saw traffic diverted along the A817 Haul Road from 1pm onwards yesterday.

But the A83 is still closed at the Rest and be Thankful after a landslide hit both the trunk road and the alternative Old Military Road yesterday evening.

BEAR Scotland say 65mm of rain fell at the site yesterday and safety assessments will start again this morning, adding: “Specialist geotechnical contractors have carried out initial visual assessments from the roadside but initial indications are that there is still movement on the hillside and it is unsafe to begin clear-up operations or carry out further assessments.”

With traffic forced to use either the lengthy diversion route via the A82 and A85, calls for a permanent solution – perhaps even a tunnel – rather than a ‘sticking plaster approach’ to the problem will be renewed.

The diversion route itself is affected by yesterday’s downpours, with temporary traffic lights on the A82 at Inveruglas after heavy rain and flooding affected a retaining wall.

The West Highland railway line is still closed after a landslide between Helensburgh and Arrochar.

Buses are replacing trains between Glasgow and Crianlarich, trains are running normally between Crianlarich, Oban, Fort William, and Mallaig.

The main railway line from Helensburgh Central to Glasgow was also closed for much of yesterday, but ScotRail says there is now a good service on this route.
