Food waste collections to restart this month

Kerbside food waste collections will resume in Helensburgh and Lomond  later this month.

Argyll and Bute Council says residents should use the council website to see when their first collection will be.

Anyone with a printed calendar should start following it again for your food waste collection dates from August 17.

The authority also said that since some people may have run out of bags for their food caddy some local shops havea greed to hold a stock of them for collection until the end of August.

These are:

  • Helensburgh Co-op
  • Rosneath Co-op
  • Cardross Co-op
  • Kilcreggan Costcutter
  • Garelochhead – Eureka
  • Arrochar – The Slanj

Anyone who cannot pick up bags ready for the first collection is asked to put their clean, empty caddy, with any bag tied to the handle, out on the kerbside on its first collection day.

The council will leave a roll of bags in the caddy.

A statement today added: “Please don’t put out a caddy with unbagged food waste, particularly if you need a roll of caddy bags.  We won’t leave a clean roll of bags in a dirty caddy.

“Can we also remind you not to put any food waste in a normal plastic bag. We use compostable bags because the food waste is processed and turned into either energy or compost and normal plastic bags would interfere with this process.”

Robin Currie, Policy lead for housing, roads and infrastructure services, said: “This marks another step back to more normal services.

“I’d like to thank residents for their patience during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have had to change the way we work and I know this has not always been easy for people.

“Nonetheless, many folk have sent kind messages to our bin crews over the past weeks and months. Thank you for your understanding – it has been appreciated.”
