Two saved in late night rescue on the Clyde

Rescue teams including a helicopter saved two men from a small boat adrift in the Clyde during last night’s storm.

But a major search for a third person, who was thought to be on another boat in the same area, was suspended at 3pm today.

Last night Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team was called out at 11.25 after a report of two small vessels drifting with people aboard near Cardwell Bay, Gourock.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, the Helensburgh RNLI lifeboat recovered  two men from a small vessel.

They were then taken care of first by the coastguard and then the Scottish Ambulance Service.

In atrocious conditions the lifeboat returned to search for the second vessel, joined by the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, Police Scotland, coastguard rescue teams from Helensburgh and Kilcreggan and Ministry of Defence Police.

Despite high winds and torrential rain the search continued until 4am, resuming at 10am, with extensive searches on both sides of the Clyde.

The Helensburgh lifeboat was also in action the previous night, after police requested they launch at 7.33pm following the report of a woman unsteady on her feet near the steps leading to the water at Margaret Street, Greenock.

The lifeboat and coastguard helicopter searched the area for more than an hour, but were then stood down with nothing untoward being found.
