Vanilla Ice, Gritny Spears, Captain Gritter Pants and The Grittersaurus will all be seen in Argyll and Bute this winter.

They are the names dreamed up by primary school pupils for 17 new vehicles which joined the council’s fleet in October.

The authority decided to name one vehicle in each of its four regions, so asked for ideas and drawings from pupils.

The winners were:

  • Thomas Meikle, of Colgrain Primary School, Helensburgh and Lomond – Captain Gritter Pants
  • Southend Primary School, Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands – The Grittersaurus
  • Emily Hutchins, Strachur Primary, Bute and Cowal – Vanilla Ice
  • Ayla Purfit, Salen Primary, Oban, Lorn and the Isles – Gritny Spears

Pippa Milne, the council’s executive director, said: “Along with my fellow judge, executive director Douglas Hendry, I was absolutely blown away with all the entries. We had a lot of fun looking through all the names and amazing drawings and we found it really difficult to choose winners.

“We are very grateful that our pupils took the time, and the effort, to come up with such wonderful ideas. Everyone who took part is very talented and should be very proud.”

Entrants will receive a certificate and the winning names will be put on plaques on the local vehicles.
