No Drone Zone – warning signs near naval bases

Dozens of signs warning that anyone flying drones could be prosecuted have appeared on Ministry of Defence land on the Rosneath Peninsula.

In December it was revealed that MoD Police had been making door-to-door inquiries in the Kilcreggan area after a drone was sighted near a nuclear submarine.

And the latest action comes as Police Scotland are investigating the sighting by a pilot of a drone near to Clydebank College last night.

The ‘No drone zone’ signs have appeared on the MoD road to Coulport and its link with the Peaton Hill road, at intervals of approximately 400 metres.

They warn that unauthorised use of drones is strictly prohibited, and ask for sightings to be reported.

The Faslane naval base and Coulport armaments depot are among the nuclear sites listed in restriction of flying regulations which took effect in 2016.

A spokesperson for HM Naval Base Clyde said today that there had been no prosecutions in the area as yet, but the use of drones was becoming increasingly common.

“There has been a Civil Aviation Authority no-fly zone over HMNB Clyde and military lands for many years; however, with drones very much in recent headlines, the MoD is taking the opportunity to emphasise the restrictions which apply in the local area,” he added.

The no fly zone is highlighted on this map from the NATS website

“Signage will be displayed around the MoD estate to remind people of the drone no-fly zones and we encourage anyone spotting drone use to report it immediately to MoD Police on 01436 655765.

“It is acknowledged that most drone users will operate safely and responsibly, but some may be unfamiliar with the restrictions over the naval base and military lands.

“Part of being responsible is to follow the rules and obtain the necessary permissions from the CAA beforehand.”
