Investigation after drone incident near Clyde nuclear bases

The drone is thought to have been flown near to an Astute-class nuclear-powered submarine

The Ministry of Defence is investigating after a drone was flown in a prohibited area near the Faslane and Coulport nuclear bases last week.

It is understood that the drone was spotted in the vicinity of an Astute-class submarine while it was at sea, and that MoD Police were making door-to-door inquiries in the Kilcreggan area afterwards.

The MoD has said it never discusses submarine movements, but a spokesperson added: “We can confirm that there was a sighting of a drone in the vicinity of HM Naval Base Clyde.

“The person operating the drone has not been identified and there is an investigation ongoing.

“At no time was there any risk to any vessel or any members of the public.

The blue pin marks the centre of the no-fly zone.

“It is an offence to fly a drone in this area without the permission of the Civil Aviation Authority.”

She also urged members of the public to come forward if there were any sightings of drones.

The Faslane naval base and Coulport armaments depot are among the nuclear sites listed in restriction of flying regulations which took effect in 2016.

It covers everywhere in a radius of two nautical miles from a point on the Coulport site – this includes Faslane, and sections of Loch Long, the Gareloch and the Rosneath peninsula, to a height of 2,200 feet above sea level.

The no fly zone is highlighted on this map from the NATS website
