News in brief: Fifth defibrillator, lifeboat called to yacht without steerage

A fifth lifesaving defibrillator machine has been installed on the Rosneath Peninsula.

The latest cabinet has been installed in the Café at Kilcreggan as part of the scheme organised by the Garelochhead and Rosneath Peninsula Community First Responders.

It was paid for thanks to an anonymous donation from a Kilcreggan family who wanted a memorial to their parents and grandparents.

A spokesman for the first responders said: “A massive thank you goes to Siona for coming to the rescue at the last minute when the Bank Of Scotland withdrew its support to house the defib and cabinet on the grounds of health and safety.

“Siona has stepped in, to support us and provide this valuable resource for Kilcreggan.”

Helensburgh’s lifeboat was called out in the early hours of Sunday morning to help a yacht that had completely lost steerage in the Clyde.

At 03:23am Belfast Coastguard received a ‘pan-pan’ call from the owner of a 25′ yacht that had experienced rudder problems while on passage from Millport to Rhu.

The flood tide had carried the vessel towards the Cockle Banks at Port Glasgow.

The lifeboat crew located the yacht some 700 metres outside the Clyde navigation channel.

It was rigged for an alongside tow and taken to the Greenock Ocean Terminal where it was made secure: the crew of the yacht were then taken back to Rhu Marina by the lifeboat.
