Lochside A814 road unsuitable for HGVs, drivers warned

Lorry and coach drivers are being urged not to use a narrow stretch of road along the side of Loch Long.

The A814 between Arrochar and Whistlefield is notoriously undulating and narrow, meaning two cars can have difficulty passing in some places.

Coaches and lorries can find it impossible to negotiate at times, especially when large amounts of traffic try to use the route as a diversion when the A82 alongside Loch Lomond is blocked

When this happened last August both roads became completely gridlocked, with queues of traffic several miles long.

Now Argyll and Bute Council has installed warnings signs on the approaches to the Whistlefield roundabout – although one of them may prove hard to read because of overgrown bushes on the verge.

A spokesman said: “The council is discouraging HGVs from using this stretch of road, and has erected advisory signs to that effect.

“We will monitor the situation over the next few months.”
