Pedestrian crossing ‘still needed in Rosneath’

There have been new calls for a zebra crossing in the middle of Rosneath village.

Originally agreed six years ago, work did not go ahead because Argyll and Bute Council was waiting for the long-awaited new Co-op store to be completed.

The shop opened last month, but its car parking is still not available and now some drivers are causing a new road hazard by parking on the pavement outside, blocking motorists’ views to the left as they try to pull out from the Clachan.

Now local councillor George Freeman has revealed that council officials were asked for a timescale for the new pedestrian crossing on the B833, adding: “Officers have responded by saying that there is currently no business case and no funding has been allocated towards the cost of the crossing, although officers have confirmed that they have already requested vehicle and pedestrian surveys to be carried out which can be used to inform a business case.

“This appears to be at variance with similar crossings at Garelochhead and Kilcreggan where no such surveys or business cases were required.

“Officers have stated that, assuming the business case meets the criteria, they can then bid for funding to be included in a future programme.

“From the response provided by officers, it would appear that they do not envisage the crossing… being installed at any stage in the near future.”

He has submitted a motion, seconded by Cllr Vivien Dance, to next week’s meeting of the council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee, noting concern that no funding has been allocated for the crossing, and asking for an update next month.
