News in brief: Road damaged in flood, composer’s work premiered at Fringe, MSP and Tesco help food bank

The main B833 road through Kilcreggan was damaged in torrential rain which hit the area last weekend.Bottom of Tigh Dearg

A section of tarmac on Shore Road at the bottom of Tigh Dearg Road appeared to have been lifted and broken up by floodwater.

Residents have been complaining of severe flooding problems on Tigh Dearg for some years, and last month Argyll and Bute Council listed it as one of four areas scheduled for a surface water management plan in conjunction with SEPA.

A work by Rhu flautist and composer Louise Burnet will feature at an Edinburgh Fringe event on August 21.

Love Over Scotland at Canongate Kirk has a programme devoted exclusively to haiku and music, brings together Scottish writers Alexander McCall Smith, George Bruce and Alan Spence, with Scottish composers Martin Suckling, John Maxwell Geddes, Colin Suckling, Tom Cunningham and Louise Burnet, whose Morning Glory for tenor, piano and wind quintet will be one of three world premieres.

Tesco Food Bank collection

MSP Jackie Baillie joined forces with staff and shoppers at Tesco to collect supplies for local people who are experiencing tough times financially.

Last week the Sinclair Street store encouraged shoppers to buy an extra item or two to donate to Helensburgh and Lomond Food Bank.

Generous Helensburgh shoppers donated around 80 crates of food over the course of the collection drive and Tesco have added an extra 30% to the total.

Jackie went along on Saturday to get a better insight of the initiative and help staff drum up support from shoppers, and said: “I would like to thank shoppers in Helensburgh for their incredible generosity and the staff at Tesco for organising the collection.

“It is expected that even more emergency food parcels will be handed out over the school holidays when families who normally receive free school meals struggle to feed their children.”
