Call for action as fly-tippers strike again near Helensburgh

CARMAN HILL2 JULY 15

There have been new calls for fly-tippers to be prosecuted after another incident, this time near Cardross.

Bedding, furniture, white goods and bags of household rubbish were dumped across the entrance to a field on Carman Hill some weeks ago.

Cardross resident John Robins, who took this photograph, has called for Argyll and Bute Council to remove the waste ad inspect it to see if the owner can be traced.

“Sadly Carman Hill is used frequently by fly-tippers,” he said.

“If cameras were installed at the Cardross and Renton ends of the road any vehicles which go up the hill full of rubbish and come down empty could be identified and traced.

“Culprits may also be identified by items such as addressed envelopes or letters in the rubbish left behind. Only a real risk of prosecution will stop these vandals desecrating the countryside.

“If I had my way fly-tippers would not only be fined, they would forfeit their vehicles as well.”

The Rosneath Peninsula has been targeted three times by fly-tippers in recent years and residents are asked to report incidents to the council’s website – as Mr Robins pointed out though, this requires postcodes which can be problematic for rural areas, and photographs cannot be uploaded.

Cllr Richard Trail said: “Fly tipping is irresponsible behaviour. The council provides amenity sites where rubbish can be disposed of conveniently.

“Fly tipping shows a callous disregard for the environment. It is an affront to the many who care for our environment. If anyone has any knowledge of who is doing it they should report it to the council or police.”
