The full list of candidates for May’s local council elections was published today (Thursday).
It will be the end of an era spanning several decades, with the council’s Provost Billy Petrie – recently made a Freeman of Argyll and Bute – not seeking re-election.
But several sitting councillors are seeking to remain in office, including Independents George Freeman and Danny Kelly in the Lomond North ward.
With three seats up for grabs they will face competition from Tory Maurice Corry, Labour’s Fiona Howard, Independent Robert MacIntyre, the SNP’s Kenneth Smith and Independent Susie Will.
Only four candidates will contest the Helensburgh & Lomond South ward – Lib Dems Ellen Morton and Andrew Nisbet, Tory David Kinniburgh and the SNP’s Richard Trail.
The Helensburgh Central seat will be contested by Independents Vivien Dance and David Allen, Richard Humphrey (no description given), Lib Dem Aileen Morton and Tory Gary Mulvaney.

Many candidates across Argyll and Bute are termed Independent, but this can translate into a confusing picture if they are elected.
The council’s largest political group is currently the Alliance of Independent Councillors; there is also the Argyll and Bute Independent Councillors Group and the Argyll First group.
Councillors currently listed on the authority’s website under these various labels are all standing for election as ‘Independent’ – as well, of course, as candidates who are really intending to be independent and have no such affiliations.
