Boulder risk keeps main A83 closed

The main A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful will remain closed until next Monday amid fears over heavy boulders on the hillside.

Traffic was diverted onto the single-track Old Military Road (OMR) diversion route yesterday, after up to 50mm of rain in just 12 hours was predicted.

Engineers say there have been ‘significant movements’ on the hillside in Glen Croe, with boulders being brought to the surface.

These will be tackled over the weekend by contractors BEAR Scotland, ahead of a safety review on Monday morning.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s north west representative, said: “While we monitor the situation closely, we’ve decided to use the Old Military Road as a proactive safety measure.

“We understand that this can be inconvenient and we apologise for any disruption, but safety remains the priority.

“Using the Old Military Road will ensure the route remains accessible for travellers, keeping Argyll very much open for business.”
