New plans to accommodate hundreds of navy personnel at Faslane are to go on display.

Last October it was revealed here that the number of Royal Navy personnel living at the base was set to rise by nearly 40%.

All of the accommodation at the base – a total of 2,602 cabins – has been built in the last 20 years.

But another 1,025 cabins are being planned to house extra staff who will move to the Clyde when the Royal Navy Submarine Training Centre opens there next year.

And now the first stage of the new accommodation – 637 single accommodation units for military personnel – is to be made public by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

A pre-application consultation proposal of application notice has been lodged with Argyll and Bute Council by CRGP Ltd of Glasgow, representing the DIO.

So far no illustrations have been released, though location plans show the new building or buildings will be ‘within the wire’ at Faslane.

Two public consultation events are planned in Centre 81 in Garelochhead – on April 26 and May 17, from 1.30pm to 8pm in both cases.

As well as the accommodation, more infrastructure is being planned at the base on the Gareloch to accommodate new Dreadnought-class submarines, Commander Peter Noblett, executive officer at HM Naval Base Clyde said last October.

He said many buildings in the working areas of the base were ‘nearing the end of their serviceable life’ and would be replaced in the next few years.

And the new Dreadnought subs (above) will ‘require additional infrastructure work around jetties and docking facilities’.

The four Dreadnought-Class submarines, each the length of three Olympic swimming pools and armed with Trident nuclear missiles, will replace the Vanguard-class submarines and are expected to enter service in the early 2030s.
