Fire on aircraft carrier investigated

A fire broke out on an aircraft carrier while it was in Loch Long, the Royal Navy has confirmed.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is alongside at Glen Mallan before going to dry dock at Rosyth for repairs.

There were no injuries in the fire, which is now being investigated by the Royal Navy and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “A minor, isolated fire on HMS Queen Elizabeth was quickly brought under control and extinguished.”

The A814 between Garelochhead and Arrochar has again been closed, together with the C69 Glen Douglas road.

An Argyll and Bute spokesperson said: “The road closure is at the request of the MoD. There will be traffic management and it will only be shut when indicated by signs.”

Drivers now have to take a diversion via the A82 which would add 13 miles to their journey.

It is understood that ammunition is being unloaded for storage at the Glen Douglas munitions depot.
