Helensburgh road closed as more rain approaches

The main A814 through Helensburgh was closed this morning amid more warnings of heavy rain.

Scottish Water staff have closed Clyde Street between Sinclair Street and Charlotte Street, with a blocked drain overflowing.

Most other roads in the area have reopened following Saturday’s storm, which produced the worst flooding for many years, but the A83 is still closed after several landslides on the stretch between Tarbet and Inveraray.

Contractors Bear Scotland say that qround 9,500 tonnes of debris removed from the trunk road so far but another 2,000 tonnes on the hillside needs to be removed before the road can safely open.

The area around the A83 Rest and Be Thankful saw a month’s worth of rainfall, around 160mm, fall over 36 hours.

Engineers say that catch pits and fences stopped around 2,500 tonnes of debris and have ensured that only a small amount reached the road at the Rest and Be Thankful itself. This section is now clear.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s north west representative, said, “The scale of the operation to clear the A83 is considerable, but the teams on site are working hard and for as long as they can safely do so. We’re working with partners to assess current conditions and continue the clean up in advance of further rain forecast on Tuesday.

“We want to thank the local residents in the area for their patience.

“Our priority is to get the road open again as soon as possible, while ensuring the safety of those on site.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for rain in the region, which will be in force until 9pm.

ScotRail has imposed speed limits on routes including the West Highland Line.
