Nasmyth starter for arts society’s winter session

Lectures ranging from Boticelli’s Florence to the works of Winnie the Pooh will feature in the new season for a Helensburgh-based group.

The Arts Society Lomond and Argyll’s winter 2023/24 session will start on September 12 at 10.30am, when Patricia Andrew will present Alexander Nasmyth 1758-1840: Painter and Polymath.

Nasmyth was one of Edinburgh’s most versatile artists and the lecture charts his life and work, taking a fresh look at his paintings and his wider achievements, as well as his friendships (notably with Robert Burns), his political views and their consequences.

The talk is the start of a varied and fascinating range of presentations at the society, which meets once a month at the Victoria Halls.

Society member Roo Irvine said: “We have announced this year’s new programme filled with culturally rich, diverse lectures ranging from Boticelli’s Florence and British Ceramics to Japanese Art and even the works of Winnie the Pooh.

“We look forward to welcoming back our existing members and invite new members to come along and expand their cultural horizons with top tier lecturers, and most of all, fabulous company amongst fellow Arts Society members.”

Single membership for the full programme of 10 lecturers is £50, and a joint membership is £75.

Lectures usually take place on the second Tuesday of the month, beginning at 10.30am, with teas and coffees served from 10am.

Other lectures include The Romans who made Britain, The Cities of the Hanseatic League, a look at the court of Elizabeth I, and the men who have shaped tailoring in the last 200 years.

Details on how to join the society, as well as the full list of lectures is available at www.tasla.org.uk.

As well as its monthly lectures, the group also organises various visits and trips during the year.
