Painting by Violet Kay for sale in auction

A painting by former Helensburgh artist Violet McNeish Kay is for sale in an online auction which closes tomorrow night (Monday).

Still Life Vase With Flowers is being sold by Glasgow auctioneers McTear’s with an estimate of £150 to £250.

It is oil on board, with a signed framed image size of 20cm by 30cm.

Born in Glasgow and the daughter of the artist James Kay, Violet studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1931 to 1933.

She exhibited with the RSW (The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour) and was made a member shortly after World War II.

She was also a member of the Paisley Institute, RSA and Glasgow Lady Artists’ Club.

The Helensburgh Heritage Trust website says that Violet St Bride’s (now Lomond) School in Helensburgh and during World War Two she worked in the drawing offices of McGruers of Clynder; she and died of a heart attack at a Scottish country dancing class in Garelochhead.
