Speeding drivers in Kilcreggan ‘think they are untouchable’

Speeding drivers in Kilcreggan ‘think they are untouchable’ because of the low police presence, a meeting heard this week.

Concerns for children’s safety were raised at Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council – while three walls had been damaged by vehicles within the last few weeks,

Following complaints of speeding on Argyll Road and Shore Road Police Scotland has given 120 stickers to the community council which can be attached to bins, warning of the dangers of breaking a 30mph limit.

But concerns were raised on Tuesday about drivers in the 20mph zone near the village primary school.

Sheelagh O’Reilly said her wall, on the corner with Sore Road, had been damaged by a vehicle which didn’t stop – but then drivers hit cones put up by the stonemason repairing his life at risk.

“There have been a number of people driving too fast,” she said.

“This has become a problem with people driving recklessly – they think they are untouchable, that is the problem, because there is so little police presence.”

She said drivers frequently cut the corner at the bottom of School Road, while speed bumps were ineffective because the road surface had been raised.

“The standard of driving in a 20mph zone is so poor, I would have serious concerns for children, particularly at school times in the morning and evening,” she added.

She said a bollard was needed at the Shore Road junction but Argyll and Bute Council didn’t see the situation as a problem.

Cllr Mark Irvine said he would take up the issue.

  1. Speeding has been a problem on peninsula roads for decades. In my observation, they’re mostly local residents or the local service busses which are on a ludicrous timetable.
The fact that Police Scotland think the solution is a bunch of stickers is a perfect example of their indifference. Total contempt.
