Council tax increase ‘a scandal’ says MSP

MSP Jackie Baillie has attacked proposals for steep council tax increases as a ‘scandal’.

The changes would hit 14,963 households in Argyll and Bute.

The SNP’s Holyrood administration – supported by local government organisation COSLA – is currently consulting on plans to hike council tax for properties in bands E to H – which would impact on 32% of households in Argyll and Bute.

Residents could face increases of up to £815.41 in Argyll and Bute, in addition to the usual annual increase, which last year was 5%  – details of the proposed increases are here.

The Dumbarto0n constituency MSP said “Years of brutal cuts by the SNP have left local council services at breaking point, and now the government wants to plug the gaps with eye-watering council tax hikes.

“It is a scandal that ordinary Scots are once again being asked to pay more while getting less in return.

“This damaging council tax bombshell will hit 14,963 households in Argyll and Bute during the worst cost of living crisis in decades, piling pressure on people already facing impossible financial decisions.

“Scots struggling with rising housing costs should be getting support from their government – but instead they are being asked to foot the bill for the SNP’s failure.”
