Battery storage plan for green belt site near Helensburgh

A public meeting is being held over plans for a battery storage system on a green belt site owned by Luss Estates near Helensburgh.

Ylem Energy Ltd wants to build on the site at Ardencaple Farm, which it says is 450 metres away from the nearest housing.

A letter sent to residents states: “The site is located within the green belt but has been located and designed so as not to significantly affect the purpose of this land designation.

“At this stage the deign has not been finalised however it is understood the development is likely to comprise a series of modular battery storage units with a height of about three metres, transformers, cooling units and two control units.

“The majority of the structure would be hidden behind the surrounding field boundary.”

The project was included in a land use and development plan for the next ten years published by Luss Estates in May.

This also proposed housing for seven new sites – including two in Helensburgh’s green belt – as well as moving Arrochar and Tarbet railway station to create a new visitor attraction.

The controversial idea of a wind farm near Helensburgh was also revived and two hydro schemes were proposed.

More details of the proposals are here.

The battery storage plan is for a 50MW system which would feed the National Grid at times of high demand or low generation by renewables.

Ylem Energy added: “Scotland regularly has a surplus of generation when compared to its demand and the transmission network designed to transport this renewable energy to the rest of the UK has struggle to keep pace.

“For this reason the ability to store large amounts of generation to help regulate power flows north and south of the border is essential.”

The meeting will be held in the Drumfork Community Centre between 4pm and 8pm on Wednesday July 12.
