Salaries and expenses for Argyll and Bute councillors in the last financial year have now been made available.
A total of £865,922.07 was paid to elected members of the authority in 2022-23 – a 13% increase on the previous year.
The highest amount was paid to council leader Robin Currie, who lives on Islay and represents a ward that also includes the islands of Jura, Colonsay and Gigha, as well as part of the mainland.
He received a total of £53,190.22, of which £38,254.31 was his salary.
Cllr Currie said salaries were set by central government and that he represented a ‘huge and scattered’ ward.
“As a councillor – with a mainland and 4 islands in my ward) and policy lead and leader – the expenses, paid to others, is the cost of living on an island and carrying out my council business,” he added.
