New guide to Helensburgh recycling launched

Thousands of residents will receive a leaflet next week showing all the recycling facilities in Helensburgh.

Everything from paper drinks cups to broken toys can be recycled in the town, says the Grab Trust (Group for Recycling in Argyll and Bute).

Over 10,000 households in Helensburgh and the lochside will receive a leaflet from the trust next week via the Royal Mail, thanks to funding from the Kilpatrick Fraser Charitable Trust.

“We are fortunate to have a great number of recycling schemes available locally, but there are many services that many people may not be aware of,” said Jacqui Willis of GRAB.

“Costa Coffee on West Princes Street accepts all brands of single use disposable paper drinks cups for recycling.

“Regardless of where they originate and whether they have a plastic-based or plant-based lining, these cups require a dedicated waste chain and this is the only way they will be recycled in Helensburgh.

“Placing paper cups in the general recycling will result in them ending up in landfill.

“Grasshopper Toys is a Terracycle Hasbro collection point for all brands of broken toys, one of only 12 in the whole of Scotland.

“Dental products and packaging, eye care products, cosmetics, pump top bottles and roll-on deodorants are just some of the other items you may not realise you can recycle.”

Helensburgh and Lomond is currently the only area in Argyll and Bute with sufficient population density to qualify for a food waste collection service but currently only half of residents eligible to use this service do so.

All food waste can go in the food caddies – including meat, fish, bones, dairy, fruit, vegetables, used kitchen towel & paper with food residue – and these are collected weekly.

When biodegradable material such as food waste breaks down in landfill, oxygen can’t get to it and this produces methane – a potent greenhouse gas.

The food waste that is collected by the council is taken to a biogas facility and used to generate power (which is exported to the national grid) and produce a liquid fertiliser by-product.

Kitchen caddies and food waste bin can be requested online via the council website.

If you need liners for your food caddy, simply tie a liner bag to the handle of your caddy and the waste crews will leave some.

Liners can also be collected from Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre.

The Grab Trust has also created a digital map showing recycling points throughout Argyll and Bute.

If you have anything to add to this, email jacqueline.willis@grab.org.uk with a note of what can be recycled and where and we will add it to the map.
