Clean-up talks planned for Helensburgh

Community leaders are set for talks with council officials on how to spruce up Helensburgh after damage to bins and street furniture.

Norman Muir, convener of Helensburgh Community Council (HCC), has reported to an Argyll and Bute Council committee that the two parties will meet on Friday, May 19.

It is then hoped that a solution can be found to what HCC views as a problem in the centre of the town.

The report will go before the council’s Helensburgh and Lomond Community Planning Group today.

Mr Muir said: “The HCC wrote to Argyll and Bute Council with regards to problems with maintenance and repair of the infrastructure in the town.

“Concerns included damaged rubbish bins, unrepaired street furniture and repairs to the outdoor museum. It also highlighted the problem of rubbish bins promised in last year’s budget not materialising.

“A meeting to discuss these issues will be held on May 19 with Tom Murphy (council amenity manager), which we hope will begin to find permanent solutions.”

Previously Plastic-Free Helensburgh has said the town was becoming ‘pretty overwhelmed’ with rubbish on busy days.

They also asked for dedicated recycling bins to be made available in the town, but Argyll and Bute said that costs could be prohibitive.
