Celebrations to mark Maid of the Loch’s 70th anniversary

The atmosphere of the 1950s will be recreated to mark the 70th anniversary of the Maid of the Loch.

A dreamboats and petticoats weekend is being planned to celebrate the event on Loch Lomond.

Classic cars and vintage vehicles will be on display, including a 1954 Leyland Titan double decker bus which belonged to Central SMT and used to run local bus services in Dumbarton and Balloch.

This will be available for return trips between the pier and the bus station in Balloch, complete with clippie and tickets.

Jive rock and roll dance outfit Boogie Box Jive a will be performing over the weekend, as well as other local musicians – anyone else interested in taking part should contact the Loch Lomond Steamship Company.

Programme manager Charli Summers said: “The weekend will mark an incredibly special moment for the Maid.

“Not only is it her 70th birthday but the ongoing restoration work also saves the ship for another 70 years.

“The weekend extravaganza will have something for everyone and is a family friendly event. Please join us to mark this special occasion.”

The event takes place on Balloch Pier on Saturday and Sunday May 27 and 28 from 11am to 4pm.

Entry will be free and other activities across the site include face painting, crafts and model boat sailing with the Knightswood club, as well as the historic winch house ‘in steam.’

The Life Aquatic exhibition and hard hat tours will be available as normal.

Loch Lomond Steamship Company is a charity founded in 1996 and is entirely volunteer-led. The ship is currently on the A-listed historic slipway undergoing extensive restoration.
