Call for safety measures on A814 in Shandon

A four-car accident has led to calls for action on a main road near Helensburgh.

The crash happened on the A814 in Shandon last Tuesday morning, at a time when the road often busy with commuters.

The speed limit on that stretch of the road is 50mph, and it is often used by cyclists as well as cars because of complaints about the existing cycle path.

Now Rhu and Shandon Community Council asked for the public to get in touch and say how the road could be made safer.

“This is a notoriously dangerous stretch of road, with cars regularly exceeding the speed limit in both directions, but especially from the Garelochhead direction,” said a spokesperson.

“The community council would like the views of the community on what ought to be done to make this stretch of road safer.”

Residents are asked to contact any member of the community council – their details are here.

Last December plans for a new cycle path to run through Shandon were revealed here.

The total cost for a link between Helensburgh and Garelochhead would be £10m – and the cost would rise by nearly £3m if new ‘placemaking nodes’ are included.

Transport Scotland and SPT have awarded £200,000 develop a new concept design to a technical stage.
