Cove and Kilcreggan community survey results released

The natural environment and local shops are the most important aspects of living in Cove and Kilcreggan, according to a new survey.

The first results of the survey conducted as part of the ‘Our Community’ project were revealed in a Zoom workshop this week.,

And they will form the basis of discussion at another workshop, in Cove Burgh Hall tomorrow (Saturday).

Consultants SKS ran an online survey earlier this year, which produced 380 responses, with the aim of producing a local place plan for the villages.

Nicky Hesketh of SKS told this week’s Zoom meeting: “We had an incredible response – 380, which is really unheard of for communities of your size, that’s a really amazing response.”

And the survey showed:

  • When asked what aspects of living in Cove and Kilcreggan were most important, the top response was ‘natural environment,’ just ahead of local shops and post office
  • Respondents said access to green space and nature, while there was adequate private housing  and good schooling
  • The least well catered for were minority groups, people of working age, young children and people with health needs
  • Safeguarding the ferry and bus services were seen as the most important transport and infrastructure priorities.
  • For housing, people said the focus should be on community input into future development plans for new homes,  infrastructure and streetscaping – then sheltered housing for the elderly.
  • Almost 60% thought new signs for walking and cycling were the most important priority for tourism, just ahead of moorings and facilities for visiting boats
  • Wildlife protection and recycling were the top priorities for the environment and tackling climate change.

The ‘Our Community’ project is jointly run by Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council and Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust.

The event in the burgh hall will start at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) – registration is via Eventbrite.
