Junior sailors and marines at Faslane were given a festive treat last week, when they were served a Christmas dinner by officers.
The turkey dinner with all the trimmings was the continuation of an age-old Royal Navy tradition where officers show their appreciation to those on duty over the Christmas period.
On some vessels the tradition was taken even further, with the most junior sailor changing places with the commanding officer for the day, even issuing orders to his crewmembers.
Officers, including the naval base commander Commodore Sharon Malkin (above), looked festive in their Christmas jumpers and hats and were kept busy greeting the junior personnel and making sure they had everything they needed to enjoy their Christmas meal.
Cdre Malkin said: “It is great to have arrived at HMNB Clyde in time to share some of the festive cheer.
“Serving Christmas dinner to our people is a long-standing custom in the Royal Navy, and a privilege that myself and Commodore Paul Dunn were delighted to join.”
“Many of our armed forces personnel will be unable to spend time with their families over Christmas.
“I, like all senior officers, recognise the commitment and dedication of all Serving personnel and their families. My thoughts will be with those who remain on-watch over the festive period.”
