New plans revealed for derelict church hall

New plans have been revealed to convert a former church hall in Cove into a family home.

Over 150 years old and B-listed, Craigrownie Church Hall has stood ]empty since 2010 and changed hands twice last year.

But now plans have been submitted by Asim Jadoon to turn it into a  five-bedroom house with a separate residential annexe.

Built as a United Presbyterian Church in 1869 by architect Hugh Barclay, the building has suffered from vandalism in recent years but a design and access statement drawn up by architects Hoko design says it is ‘mostly still in good condition’.

“The front porch has strong signs of deterioration,” the statement adds.

“The main roof has various leaks but the timber structure looks to be in good health.

“The annex roofs to the rear of the property are in various states with some requiring repair and others replacing.

“Many of the windows are currently boarded up.”

They say the new owners want to restore the building’s original character by restoring timber fascia at the front and removing a suspended ceiling – proposals are shown below.

“This proposal will ensure that this renowned community building will continue to exist and be used for many generations to come,” the statement adds.

“With increased vandalism on the site and progressive deterioration of the building envelope, this proposed design will secure and restore the church hall whilst providing a home to a family.

“The design encourages a light-filled family accommodation on a derelict site in a manner which safeguards the heritage asset and does not harm the character or setting of the listed property.

“Nor does it compromise the character, amenity or local landscape enjoyment of the surrounding properties.”

More details are available on Argyll and Bute Council’s website – the reference number is 22/00992/PP .
