Unicef award for Hermitage Academy

Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh is celebrating after being given national recognition for its status as a Rights Respecting School.

The Cardross Road school was given the accolade by Unicef UK, in view of its work to show visitors from the charity how it respects the rights of all in the school community.

According to a statement on Unicef UK’s website, assessors looked  at “the whole school’s rights respecting work and the impact that has been made through embedding children’s rights into school life”.

A glowing verdict has been received and parents at the school were informed via the most recent edition of the school’s newsletter.

A statement by the school said: “After being assessed in January, we are delighted to announce Hermitage Academy has been awarded with Unicef UK’s Rights Respecting School award at Gold: Rights Respecting.

“The assessors would like to thank the young people, the senior leadership team (SLT), and staff for their warm welcome to the school, for the opportunity to speak with adults and children during the assessment and for the detailed evidence provided to support the process.

“We would like to congratulate our young people, staff, parents and partners for their contribution and commitment towards this achievement.

“It was acknowledged that there is ‘a clear enthusiasm and commitment for a rights-based approach which is supported by the SLT, staff and young people, all of whom recognise the impact of knowing their rights’.

“A special thanks to our rights respecting school pupil group, [for] their dedication to leading and steering change within the school and the wider school community.

“Their fundraising work and involvement in incorporating pupil voice into the SIP (School Improvement Plan) One Page Plan has encouraged our young people to take action to uphold their rights and the rights of others locally and globally.”
