National award for Helensburgh charity Fun First

A Helensburgh-based charity was named awarded Military Family Charity of 2022 this weekend.

Fun First, which operates in Helensburgh, Garelochhead and on the Rosneath Peninsula received the award in London’s Victory Club for its support for families during the pandemic.

Fun First moved online to provide support, online sessions and a virtual place for families to meet and come together during lockdown restrictions.

Staff even conducted online events such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties online – Father Christmas and his elf delivered presents and craft packs, socially distanced, to eager children waiting on the doorstep or peeking through windows.

Sarah Davies, the chair of Fun First, collected the award on Friday night on behalf of the committee, leaders and families.

She said: “It is amazing that a small charity like ours, set up by a group of mums 20 years ago, has been recognised in this way.

“We want to pay tribute to everyone who has been involved with the charity in any way , however small their contribution.

“This is an award for the whole Helensburgh community who regularly welcome new military families into our town.

“We will celebrate with a very special teddy bears’ picnic and we encourage anyone who has played a role in our success, however small, during the 20 years to join in.”
