Wildfire on Carman Hill as warnings are renewed

A wildfire was raging on the Carman Hill tonight, after firefighters warned of an ‘extreme risk’ of blazes.

Flames could be seen on the hill between Cardross and Renton.from as far away as Dumbarton, where Garry Freeburn took this photograph.

A large blaze near Kyle of Lochalsh is also being fought tonight, and last month a fire broke out along a one-kilometre front on Ben Lomond.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service issued a warning last week that fires could ignite and spread easily with warm temperatures and strong winds forecast.

Group Commander Keith Langley, a wildfire tactical advisor, urged the public to take the utmost care in the countryside.

He said: “The key issues are sunshine, warm air temperatures, low humidity and moderate to strong winds.

“Dead grass, leaves, twigs and heather on the ground will dry quite quickly in these conditions and when ignited can burn very fast with extreme fire intensity.

“Please exercise caution outdoors to avoid fires breaking out and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame.”
