Wildfire burns on Ben Lomond

Firefighters are still battling a wildfire which took hold on part of Ben Lomond yesterday afternoon.

Covering a one-kilometre front, it was said to burning through an area where natural regeneration of woodland was starting to take place

A National Trust for Scotland spokesperson said this morning: “Fire intensity has decreased substantially overnight, but it is not yet extinguished.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are onsite this morning.

“We’re very grateful for everyone’s support and understanding at this time and ask people to please continue to avoid the area for now.”

On Sunday the fire service had issued a warning about the likeligood of wildfires this spring because of dead grass and heather left over from last year which can dry very quickly.

Deputy assistant chief officer Bruce Farquharson said: “Over the next few days in high risk areas, fires could burn and spread with very high intensity due to the weather conditions.

“We know how damaging wildfires can be to the environment, wildlife and nearby communities.

“We are asking people to act responsibly when enjoying the outdoors and please think twice before using anything involving a naked flame.”
