Ticket machines removed as an Arrochar car park is taken off the market

Drivers can use one of Arrochar’s car parks free of charge after councillors’ plans to buy it fell through.

Argyll and Bute Council said earlier this year that it wanted to buy the two Glen Loin car parks as part of a £2.35m investment in coastal communities.

But this week ticket machines were removed from one of the car parks beside the A83, where drivers usually pay £1 an hour.

A council spokesperson confirmed: “The council made a bid on Glen Loin 1 but the owners decided to remove it from the market.

“The sale of Glen Loin 2 has gone to closing date and we are waiting to hear the outcome.”

Both car parks had been leased by the council but were put on the market when the lease expired last year, with offers over £150,000 invited.

In February the council set aside £600,000 to buy the car parks and a dangerous building which has frequently forced the closure of East Clyde Street in Helensburgh.

It was part of total spending of £2.35m across Argyll and Bute, funded by the Crown Estate and intended to benefit coastal communities based on the environment, community, climate change and economic development.
