Huge traffic jams on A82 during A814 roadworks

There were huge delays on the A82 beside Loch Lomond last night, as bank holiday traffic was made worse by a road closure in Dumbarton.

Saturday and Sunday also saw long queues of traffic on the trunk road with hot sunny weather seeing an influx of day trippers, as well as tourists looking to enjoy a weekend break.

But on Monday afternoon and evening the road was jammed solid for several miles, with some drivers saying it took 150 minutes to travel from Luss to Dumbarton.

The alternative route, from Helensburgh towards Glasgow on the A814, was closed from 6pm by Argyll and Bute Council as a programme of roadworks got under way.

The work, which started yesterday, is expected to last until June 11, with the road closed between 6pm and 5am from the junction of the Carman Road in Cardross to Cats Castle near Dumbarton.

A council spokesperson said: “The work on the A814 is part of a £10m roads improvement programme across Argyll and Bute.

“This is a huge undertaking that includes work we were unable to carry out last year because of the pandemic, plus significant extra investment this year.

“We have a window of opportunity during the better spring and summer weather to deliver an ever-improving road network for residents and visitors.

“Details of the planned programme of works can be found on our website.”
