Rest and Be Thankful closed by ‘significant’ landslide

Only six days after it reopened, the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful has been closed by what is described as a ‘significant’ landslide.

The trunk roads had been closed overnight as a precaution after rainfall of up to 90mm was forecast.

But this morning contractors BEAR Scotland said there had been another landslide overnight and both the main road and the single-track alternative Old Military Road were closed.

The company said the extent and source of the latest landslide was currently being assessed and a further update is due at 11.30am.

Traffic is once again being diverted via the A82, A85 and A819.

This is the third landslide to have closed the road through Glen Croe this year.

On August 4 it was closed when thousands of tonnes of debris slid down the hillside, including boulders the size of cars.

Engineers only reopened the road to traffic last Monday.

Transport Scotland says that 11 options for the route are being studies, while local MP Brendan O’Hara called for a tunnel to be built after last month’s closure.
