CalMac community fund is launched

Kilcreggan became part of the CalMac network this year.

Groups for the vulnerable and disadvantaged have been invited to apply for the CalMac Community Fund.

Groups operating across the CalMac network – which now includes the Kilcrggan to Gourock ferry – can apply for an award from the fund from between £500 and £2,000.

From October 1, the fund is seeking applications from non-profit organisations which make a difference to local communities by tackling social isolation, poor mental health, loneliness and/or poverty.

In 2019, the CalMac Community Fund supported 76 groups across the west coast, benefiting the lives of children and young people.

Projects included access to swimming, Highland dancing, sailing and video skills.

Gordon McKillop, corporate social responsibility manager for CalMac, said: “The CalMac Community Fund was created to make a difference to those most in need across our West Coast communities.

“It is also a fantastic way for us to connect with our communities.

“The COVID-19 pandemic placed a huge strain on people’s lives and there has been a lot of great community work going on to help those affected. We would love to hear more about these projects and would encourage those eligible to apply for an award.

“The community fund was really well received when it was originally launched and we were able to help 76 groups. I am looking forward to hearing more about the great work that is taking place to help those in need.”

Organisations can apply if:

  • They are not for profit and registered to an island or port served by CalMac
  • They have a governing document or constitution
  • They have an independent bank account
  • They have two or more unrelated board members
  • They have an open membership
  • They have two signatories

They will spend and report on an award within 12 months

Applications can be made online from October 1 by visiting www.calmac.co.uk/community-fund
