Jean’s Bothy takes to Zoom during lockdown

Jean’s Bothy in Helensburgh has taken its support services online during the lockdown.

The mental health and wellbeing hub has been using Zoom and Webex video apps to help members access activities and resource.

The centre provides services for members of the community who are experiencing mental health challenges, allowing them to connect to non-clinical and peer support services.

Previously services would normally be delivered face-to-face for problems and issues like stress, loneliness, relationship breakdown and caring responsibilities

Development manager Katrina Sayer said: “Adjusting to life under lockdown and adhering to COVID-19 guidance is tough and we have all found it difficult.

“For some, the strain on people’s mental health and wellbeing has been particularly high.

“People shielding have spent a long time without leaving their front door and some of our members do not have a garden and very limited space to spend outside.

“Routine has been essential to support members and for them to be able to connect digitally using simple technology has given them a huge amount of comfort. Keeping in regular contact with members has really helped to keep their spirits up.

“There is plenty of amusing Zoom video calls filled with laughter. It has been a great way to get through this challenging time.”

Jean’s Bothy opened in July 2018 and is a partnership between Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) and Enable Scotland.

Julie Cameron, lead mental health officer for Argyll and Bute HSCP, said: “The credit for the quality and sustainability of the services has been down to the resilience of Katrina Sayer, our partners, volunteers and members.

“The coordination of the services and activities that the bothy provides and the use of modern technology have never been more important to meet the challenges of Covid-19 as well as the needs of members.”

The Bothy continues to welcome referrals from GPs and support agencies and anyone aged 16 years or over is to self-refer if they would like to improve their mental health and well-being.
