Cummings should do the honourable thing, says Tory MSP

Dominic Cummings should ‘consider his position’, a Conservative MSP said today.

Maurice Corry made the comment as pressure grew further on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s special adviser, who travelled from London to a family farm County Durham during the lockdown – and several days later drove 30 miles to Barnard Castle.

Scotland Office minister Douglas Ross resigned from the government this morning, saying he could not justify Mr Cummings’ actions to his constituents.

The BBC has now reported that Jackson Carlaw, the party’s leader in Scotland, has told Downing Street that Dominic Cummings should consider his position.

And Mr Corry, an MSP for the West of Scotland region who lives in Helensburgh, said: “I believe Dominic Cummings needs to consider his position in an honourable fashion.

“The decision overall is in the hands of the PM however.

“We as a nation are in the middle of a pandemic, which is making people ill, damaging the economy and will continue to cause problems for years to come.

“It is vital we focus our attention, and efforts onto the serious problems ahead for the benefit of the nation.”

Mr Cummings’ travels during the pandemic were originally reported by the Guardian and Daily Mirror newspapers, and now even the Daily Mail – normally a staunch supporter of the current government – has said he must go.

But Mr Cummings has refused to resign or even apologise, and he is still being supported by Mr Johnson.

Meanwhile, Google Trends data shows a remarkable spike in searches for Barnard Castle since last Friday…
