Faslane gate problem caused huge tailbacks

The queue extended through Shandon and Rhu

Commuters faced long delays this morning when the main entrance to Faslane naval base was closed.

North-bound traffic on the A814 was queued back for more than three miles, with all traffic forced to use the south gate to HM Naval Based Clyde, one of the largest single-site employers in Scotland.

The bus service between Helensburgh, Garelochhead and Coulport was affected, with long delays for passengers this morning.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said at lunchtime today: “We can confirm that an electrical issue meant that the North Gate could not provide access to personnel arriving for work this morning.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

“Work to address the issue is underway and normal access will be restored as soon as possible.”

  1. Faslane has 2 main gates and is not unlikely that one will break. MOD has put all its eggs in one basket as commuters must jump through mqny hoops at the north gate while there are not the facilities available at the south gate.

If somebody had thought ahead facilities should have been set up so that access ar either gate is possible without upsetting the surrounding area.
