Short term parking signs for Kilcreggan proposed

Car park spaces in Kilcreggan could be marked as being for short term only in an attempt to solve parking problems in the village.

Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council last week heard again about the lack of parking in the village.

Coulport workers who travel by ferry and leave cars in Kilcreggan were blamed, although most of these commuters would be at work in the armaments depot during weekdays.

The meeting heard that the problems were worst in the summer and especially bad when the paddle steamer Waverley visited the village.

Mark Irvine said that on several occasions last year people wanting to board the Waverley missed their bookings because they couldn’t park.

And Sheena Edwards added: “Sometimes I drive through the village and can’t park so I go to Rosneath.”

Chairman Nick Davies said there was little chance of persuading Argyll and Bute Council to take any action, but said the community council could put A4 notices in the grass saying ‘short term only’.

“I wondered if we could make up our own notices and mark up two slots,” he said.

“It seems to me a reasonable starting point.”

He stressed this was a rural area and there were very few alternative sites for extra parking, although he may approach the owners of the old boat yard.

John Auld said at one point this summer there had been 12 cars parked by the Scottish Water works and others parked in front of the garage.

But he warned against imposing charges, pointing to the car parks run by Argyll and Bute Council in Arrochar, which now cost £9 for any stay longer than an hour.

And Argyll and Bute councillor George Freeman said: “Every community in our ward has a parking issue.

“Arrochar and Tarbet are currently looking at taking over the lease of the car parks when it expires in two years time.

“Luss is a major problem and has been for years now, they are looking at how to keep cars out of the village

“In Garelochhead for the last few months they have been investigating the possibility of creating a car park in the middle of the village

“Rosneath are up in arms about parking in the Co-op area – there are people who park on the pavement

“In each of the communities there is an issue with car parking problems.”
