A £2m regeneration project focusing on the heritage of Helensburgh town centre has been proposed.
Argyll and Bute councillors have backed to proposed heritage-led regeneration scheme for the town, as well as for Lochgilphead.
A Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) has been proposed for both towns – the council has previously secured funding to help projects in Rothesay, Dunoon, Campbeltown and Inveraray.
The council’s policy and resources committee this week agreed to earmark £500,000 for a Helensburgh CARS and £386,220 for Lochgilphead.
The authority says that final financial approval will be subject to its budget-setting process.
For the latest round of CARS funding, round eight, Historic Environment Scotland has dedicated £10m with £2m the maximum allowed per bid.
Argyll and Bute Council has submitted a request for £1.5m for Helensburgh and £969,731 for Lochgilphead.
Council leader Aileen Morton said: “Surveys of Lochgilphead and Helensburgh town centres were carried out before making the application to HES as we wanted to ensure the eventual project proposals would have a real positive impact on each town.
“The process is very competitive, but we are hopeful that our bids will be successful.”
The CARS projects would include a buildings small grant repair scheme, a shopfront improvement scheme and training events, as well as the regeneration of ‘selected priority buildings’.
