A82 claims another life with second fatal crash in three weeks

A motorcyclist died beside Loch Lomond today in the second fatal crash on that stretch of the A82 in three weeks.

Police are appealing for information after the crash, which once again led to widespread chaos on roads in the area.

Police Scotland say that at 11.45am an elderly man died when his orange Honda motorcycle was in collision with a VW van as they both travelled north on the A82, just south of Tarbet.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The male van driver was not injured.

Sergeant Kevin Craig, of Dumbarton road policing unit, said: “Whilst we have spoken to a number of people stopped to assist at the scene, we would still like to hear from anyone driving on the A82 near to Tarbet just prior to the crash.

“They may have information that will assist officers with their enquiries. Also, if anyone has dashcam footage they think might help, then please get in touch.

“Any information can be passed to Dumbarton Road Policing Unit via 101. Please quote reference number 1542/05/07 when calling.”

The truck road was closed for several hours, with the narrow A814 alongside Loch Long also becoming blocked again.

The situation was made even worse by surface dressing work being carried out on the A817 Haul Road, as well as Scottish Water roadworks in Rhu, with drivers facing long delays on all routes as Western Ferries increased sailings to Gourock to provide an alternative

  1. A814 is not a suitable alternative to A82 when an accident closed the Loch Lomond road it is basically a single track road with no markings. Today it was full of motorhomes with foreign plates who may not be used to such narrow roads and coaches going on the opposite direction, result chaos.

  2. This is all to regular an occurrence, this stretch of the A82 is claiming all to many life’s. The only real solution I can see is average speed cameras, there not popular but they do slow folk down.

Donald is also correct regards The A814 it’s simply not up to the job, I would propose a convoy system been introduced, again it’s not ideal but better than two large vehicles getting stuck half way between Arrochar and Garelochhead
