Planning applications for Creggans Inn and Kilcreggan Hotel submitted

Work has been underway outside the Creggans Inn for several weeks.

Plans for a sun terrace at the Creggans Inn and nearby Terrace Cafe, and to turn Kilcreggan’s only hotel into a private house, have been revealed this week.

The raised patio area at the front of the Creggans in Princes Terrace has already been completed – a supporting document to Argyll and Bute Council said there had been no objections when co-owners and occupiers were consulted, and it had been assumed that no planning application was needed as the work was at ground level.

The pavement would be reinstated as part of the work, with parking areas resurfaced and delineated.

The document adds: “With changing climate, the demand for outside dining and  refreshments has increased in recent years and this is patently evident in Kilcreggan from both visitors and residents alike.

“Therefore, the applicants feel that patio areas would serve as a safe and convenient solution to this demand whilst at the same time addressing, to some extent, road safety concerns.

“Reinstatement of the privately-owned footpath at the front of the property will also further improve public safety and amenity.”

Licensee Derek Fowlis said: “We wanted to improve the front of the village – people are trying to attract more tourists to the village with ferry being a far more reliable service.

“There has certainly been an upturn in tourists to the village; all we’re trying to do is enhance the village.

“The reaction has been positive on the whole.”

Meanwhile Timothy Gay, owner of the Kilcreggan Hotel, has applied to change the use of the B-listed building to a private house.

A letter by his planning agent states that the hotel has now closed and is Mr Gay’s place of residence and says the building is listed because of the fine stained glass and dark oak stair.

“The current application proposes solely the formalisation of the change of use of the building, from a hotel and bar, to a single dwelling,” it adds.

“No physical works to the listed building, either externally or internally, are proposed.”

Details of both plans are available on the council’s website the reference numbers are 18/01356/PP for the Creggans and 18/01439/PP for the hotel.
