£650,000 projects for Helensburgh town centre agreed

Colquhoun Square is at the heart of the award-winning project.

Twelve further improvements for Helensburgh town centre, costing just over £650,000, have been agreed this week.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee has decided on the projects which will benefit from surplus CHORD funds.

Ellen Morton, policy lead for infrastructure, said: “The improvements agreed will have a positive impact and further enhance Helensburgh town centre, making it even more attractive to visitors and locals and helping to boost the local economy.

“Expanding the outdoor museum, which has been well-received by everyone who experiences is also be good news for the town.”

Members agreed that the funds left over from the original town centre initiative would be used to improve James Street with the installation of granite paving and replacing the pavements in East Clyde Street, Maitland Street, West Princes Street and John Street.

The committee also gave the go-ahead to work to improve the Maitland Street car park by installing lighting, resurfacing, re-designing and marking parking bays, stabilising the boundary wall and installing a parking meter.

Additional refuse bins will be installed throughout the town centre and new signage will be erected to help direct visitors to local car parks.

The West Bay Esplanade will be enhanced and flood prevention work will be commissioned in West Clyde Street.

Finally, the town’s award-winning outdoor museum will be expanded.

It is proposed that the Light of the Comet plinth be illuminated at night and seven of the original Flotilla of Comets would be repaired, cleaned and mounted on columns.

In 2009 the council approved an investment of approximately £30m to regenerate and boost the economic development of five of its town centres – Campbeltown, Helensburgh, Oban, Rothesay and Dunoon.

£6.66m was allocated to Helensburgh – which aimed to improve the character and appearance of the town centre and the West Bay esplanade.
