Drivers have been warned to take special care to avoid deer at night on the Rosneath Peninsula.

Lachie Bain of the Ministry of Defence Police said the risk was particularly high on the Northern Access Road to Coulport currently because of the rutting season.

“There is a large herd of red deer up there,” he told Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council last night.

“At night they do appear quite suddenly and it can be dangerous, so we ask people to be careful.”

He was speaking during a follow-up visit after last month’s news, revealed here, that MoD Police will be taking a more active role in the area, both on MoD land and elsewhere.

He said staff training for additional spot checks on the Northern Access Road was still ongoing.
